What a scan tool actually tells you

A scan tool is like a translator for your car's computer. It does not just read a code — it shows data that helps you understand what is happening under the hood.

Stored codes

These are confirmed faults that have happened enough times to turn on the check engine light. The code tells you which system or circuit is affected.

Pending codes

Intermittent problems that have happened once but have not yet met the threshold to turn on the light. They are a good early warning.

Freeze-frame

A snapshot of engine speed, temperature, load, and other data at the exact moment the fault set. This helps you reproduce the conditions.

Live data

How to read the code step by step

    Read the DTC

    The five-character code starts with a letter: P for powertrain, B for body, C for chassis, and U for network. The first digit tells you if it is generic or manufacturer-specific.

    Stored codes are confirmed faults that turned on the light. Pending codes are intermittent faults that have not yet been confirmed.

    Look at freeze-frame data

    Use the snapshot of conditions when the fault happened to understand whether the problem happens at idle, under load, at speed, or when cold.

    Watch live data

    Oxygen sensors, fuel trims, misfire counts, and coolant temperature can show whether a repair is working in real time.

    Clear codes and test drive

    After a repair, clear the codes and drive the vehicle under the conditions shown in the freeze-frame data. If the light stays off, the fix likely worked.

Can a scan tool tell me exactly what part to replace?

Freeze-frame data is a snapshot of engine conditions at the exact moment the fault was set. It usually includes RPM, vehicle speed, coolant temperature, and load, which helps reproduce the problem.
