P0496
EVAP System High Purge Flow
What it means
This code means the engine's computer detected that the Evaporative Emission Control (EVAP) system is purging fuel vapor from the gas tank into the engine at an unexpectedly high rate. This usually happens when the purge valve is stuck open.
Is it safe to drive?
While often drivable, a stuck-open purge valve can cause the engine to run too rich, leading to rough idling, poor fuel economy, and potential long-term damage to the catalytic converter.
Most likely causes
Faulty EVAP Purge Valve (Stuck Open)
highThe purge valve is designed to open and close to control vapor flow; if it's stuck open, it causes excessive flow.
Damaged EVAP Hoses/Lines
mediumCracked or disconnected vacuum hoses in the EVAP system can lead to uncontrolled vapor flow.
Faulty EVAP Canister
lowWhile less common, a damaged or saturated charcoal canister could contribute to incorrect flow.
PCM Failure
lowA rare internal fault in the Powertrain Control Module could be misinterpreting sensor data or incorrectly commanding the purge valve.
