What the check engine light means
Your car's computer (ECU/PCM) constantly runs tests on the engine, transmission, emissions, and sensors. When it finds a problem it cannot fix on its own, it stores a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) and turns on the check engine light.
Steady vs. flashing light
A steady light means get it checked soon. A flashing light means stop driving now — the engine is misfiring and could damage the catalytic converter.

How to use an OBD2 scanner

Find the OBD2 port
Look under the dashboard on the driver's side, just above the brake pedal. It is a 16-pin trapezoid-shaped connector. Some cars hide it behind a small panel.

Turn the key to ON, engine off
You want the ignition in the ON/RUN position so the ECU powers up. Do not start the engine unless your scanner instructions say to.

Plug in the scanner or dongle
For a handheld scanner, plug it in and wait for it to boot. For a Bluetooth dongle, plug it in, open your phone's Bluetooth settings, and pair it.

Select 'Read Codes' or 'DTCs'
Most scanners show a simple menu. Choose Read Codes / Read DTCs. The screen will list codes like P0301, P0420, or B1234.

Write the codes down exactly
Copy the full code, including the letter. Some scanners also show freeze-frame data — a snapshot of engine conditions when the fault happened.

How to read and understand the code
Every diagnostic trouble code follows the same format: a letter followed by four digits. The first letter tells you which system the car is complaining about.

Should you clear the code?
Clearing the check engine light does not fix the problem. It only resets the warning. If the underlying fault is still there, the light will come back — sometimes within minutes, sometimes after a few drive cycles.
